BB00171: Du’a’a’l-Qur’an
In the Name of God, the Most Merciful, the Most Compassionate
O my God! How can I remember Thee according to how Thou hast created me and made me as a mirror before Thee, wherein Thou hast created all things? Glorified art Thou, O God! Shall I thank Thee for having made me among Thy greatest signs, or for having made me among Thy most beauteous names, or for having made me among Thy most exalted examples, or for having made me among Thy mightiest manifestations, or for having made me among Thy most ultimate revelations, or for having made me the Lote-Tree beyond which there is no passing, or for having made me the Tree of Blessedness, or for having made me the Garden of Refuge, or for having made me the Most Remote Mosque, or for having made me at the distance of two bows’ length or closer?
Verily, I have been truthful and confirming in what Thou hast bestowed upon me, wherein Thou hast revealed in the Qur’an all things and detailed therein all things. There is no prophet except that he is a letter thereof, and there is no successor except that he is a letter thereof, and there is no believer except that he is a letter thereof, and there is nothing in the highest heaven except that it is a letter thereof, and there is nothing under the shade of the highest heaven except that it is realized through it. For when Thou hast attributed naught but Thyself—which I love not to mention—and there was no creator besides Thee, by Thy command all measures in the hereafter and the first life were realized, and by Thy sovereignty all measures in the highest heavens and lowest earths were established.
Glorified art Thou, O God! How exalted is Thy grace and favor, and how exalted is Thy generosity and beneficence! Thou hast not neglected anything in the Book, as Thou hast said—and Thy word is the truth, and who is more truthful than Thee in speech—“Had We sent down this Qur’an upon a mountain, thou wouldst have seen it humbled and rent asunder,” etc. “And We have enumerated all things in a clear Book.”
Glorified art Thou, O God, with true glorification! Therein Thou hast revealed the mines of glorification in their essence, and therein Thou hast realized the jewels of praise in their camphor-like purity, and therein Thou hast established the mines of unity in their pristine nature, and therein the realities of detachment have become fixed upon the mysteries of holiness and uniqueness in their essence, and therein Thou hast perfected what Thou hast revealed in the Qur’an through what Thou hast ordained therein of exposition.
Therefore unto Thee do I complain, O my God, of all contingent beings, and I shall surely set forth before Thee an example of them that Thou mayest bear witness concerning me—and sufficient art Thou as witness concerning me. Verily, their example is like that wherein Thou hast placed a spring, and there has grown from the earth a tree bearing diverse fruits, and each according to what it loves and its soul desires takes from that tree and judges it according to what it takes. Some say it is a pomegranate tree, and they have spoken truly in what they have said. And some say that tree is an apple tree—these have spoken truly, but they comprehend it not. And some are more refined in view and vision, taking from that tree gardens of delight—these say it is a basil tree, and these comprehend it not.
I bear witness unto Thee, O my God, that some declare this Book to be from Thee, and they speak truly, though they comprehend it not in its fullness. Others affirm it to be from Thy Beloved One, and they too speak truly, though they comprehend it not in its fullness. Yet others say it is from Thy Chosen One, and they likewise speak truly, though they comprehend it not in its fullness. And still others maintain it is from the servant of Thy Proof, and they too speak truly, though they comprehend it not in its fullness. For verily this Tree is holy, celestial, divine, heavenly, almighty, godly, paradisiacal—it is not its own creator, rather it is the Realized Being manifesting through its revelations. It is neither of the East nor of the West, neither oriental nor occidental, neither of heaven nor of earth, but rather it is the Essence of essences through its manifestations.
Glorified art Thou, O my God! My very being is confounded before these manifestations that Thy servants have clung to. Therefore, O my God, send down from Thy presence an all-encompassing Word upon the realities of all Thy creation, from the most exalted to the lowliest atom, that every thing may witness at the Dayspring of this Cause the rising of the Qur’an and all that it contains of the highest heavens and the lowest earths and whatsoever lieth between them or beneath them. For Thou, O my God, art the Lord of the Last and the First. Thou hast not been pleased with anything in me, nor upon me, nor to my right, nor behind me, nor before me, nor to my left, nor above my head, nor beneath my feet, nor with me, nor after me, nor in anything to which the attribute of thingness can be applied, save Thy own Self-remembrance.
For Thou, O my God, art my Beloved and my Desire, and Thou, O my Lord, art my Goal and the Ultimate Object of my yearning. After I have immersed myself in the seas of multiplicity and journeyed from the Point of Beginning to the endless manifestations of Thy Kingdom, I have chosen none but Thee alone, Who hath no partner. I have seen all the Prophets within me, and numbered all the truthful ones within me, and I have witnessed all the martyrs and believers through what Thou hast created of verses in this Book. I have seen with mine own eyes all Thy paradises and what Thou hast created therein, and Thy heavens and what Thou hast brought forth therein, and what Thou hast created beneath their shade of earth, and what Thou hast established therein of fire.
For everything with Thee is in due measure. No vision can comprehend Thee, but Thou comprehendest all vision. Thou art the Beloved, the Most High, the Compeller. Thou art the Sought After, the Most Great, the Subduer. Thou art the King, the Manifest, the Creator. Thou art the Sovereign, the Almighty, the All-Glorious. Thou art the Desired One, the Inaccessible, the Bountiful. Thou art my Ultimate Goal in every moment, O my Creator and Fashion-Maker, the King, the Originator, the Mighty, the Helper.
I have witnessed none besides Thee possessing the virtue to comprehend the true meaning of the Qur’an apart from Thee, for within it is Thy Hidden Name and Thy Protected Command. Glory be unto Thee! Therefore, raise me up unto Thee and conceal me within the veils of Thy might, and comfort me with Thy remembrance and the splendor of Thy countenance’s light, and grant me in Paradise from the bounties of Thy garden and the favors of the King of Thy oneness, in such wise that I shall witness no sorrow therein, where Thou wilt gather for me the means of all things that draw me near unto Thee. For Thine is the creation and the command, and I have brought forth through verses decisive—which Thou hast made as sustenance for those possessed of understanding among the people of names and attributes—all that Thou hast created in the Qur’an from within myself.
Glorified art Thou, O my God! I commit unto Thee all that Thou hast revealed unto me and brought forth from me. I beseech Thee, O my God, by Thyself and by Thee, and by the rights of Muhammad and the Family of Muhammad with Thee, to purify all the letters that have borne witness, such that I see no letter except that it testifieth to the truth of Thy good-pleasure, inasmuch as it pointeth to the sovereignty of Thy grace and Thy splendor, and indicateth the King of Thy power and Thy bounty. Here am I, O my God, casting myself and all that Thou hast caused me to possess of the Greatest Signs, and Thy mighty Manifestations, and Thy supreme Revelations, and Thy most exalted Examples, and Thy most beautiful Names, and Thy most excellent Epiphanies, and Thy most great Stations, and Thy most elevated Paradise, and whatsoever Thou hast created through letters in the highest heavens and the lowest earth, and in the last and the first.
I beseech Thee of Thy grace, O my God, that Thou show me all my works in a mighty book, with the most excellent and impregnable calligraphy, the like of which existeth not in Thy knowledge, in such wise that Thou wilt transform all the letters that Thou hast chosen below the Book of the Most High, from Muhammad and the Family of Muhammad, into the Book of the Most High—that Thou wilt efface them by Thy power and create in their place luminous letters according to what Thou lovest and art pleased with, in the uttermost height of glory and above the glory, unto the furthermost pavilion of the Most High, until it reacheth unto Thy Name, the Most Exalted, the Most Impregnable, the Most Mighty, the Most Glorious, the Most Beautiful, the Most High, the Most Resplendent. Verily, Thou art powerful over all things, O my God, in the last and the first.
I beseech Thee, O God, to send Thy blessings upon Muhammad, and Ali, and Fatimih, and Hasan, and Husayn, and Ali son of Husayn, and Muhammad son of Ali, and Ja’far son of Muhammad, and Musa son of Ja’far, and Ali son of Musa, and Muhammad son of Ali, and Ali son of Muhammad, and Hasan son of ʿAli, and Muhammad son of Hasan, and the manifestations of those four pillars after the ten in the world of testimony and after the unseen, when the Tree of Oneness shall not manifest the station of the Primal Point in the highest unseen realm—those sacred temples of fourteen letters—nor in the world of testimony, until the Cause returneth unto Thee in the Point as it began. Verily Thou art the Lord of the heavens and the earth and whatsoever is between them.
I beseech Thee, O God, by the rights of Muhammad and Ali and Ali and Muhammad and whatsoever Thou hast created from their light, that Thou make for us all fire as light through Thy grace and mercy. Verily Thou art, over that, mighty and powerful. Glorified be thy Lord, the Lord of Glory, above what they describe.
