BB00237: Fi Tafsir-i-Kalimiy-i-Aqul (Commentary on a statement of Siyyid Kazim)
In the name of God, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful
Our Master Ali, upon him be peace, said in the Sermon of Tutunjiyyih—upon its speaker be thousands of praises and salutations—“Praise be to God Who split the atmospheres,” etc. And the Teacher, may my soul be his sacrifice, said “I say, and I do say: In the name of God, and praise be to God, I begin with God in explaining a mystery from the Word which the Word of Truth—may my soul be his sacrifice—explained concerning the Tutunjiyyih Sermon, that people might know the portion of each from the judgment of the Book according to the word of reward from what the Most Merciful hath willed in that white leaf.”
As for the reference to the word of the Imam, peace be upon him, there is no way for anyone either to reference it or to deny it. When speech reacheth unto God, be silent, for none can comprehend his words, as his words, peace be upon him, tell of his station, peace be upon him, and none knoweth it as it is save Him. Glorified be thy Lord, the Lord of Glory, above what they describe.
As for the reference to the inner meanings of the words of the Bab, may my soul be his sacrifice, the Truth hath caused the separate Point, which is the effusion from this Most Great Sea, to speak according to God’s revelation unto him thereby.
And as for the reference to his saying “I say,” [aqul] may my soul be his sacrifice, he hath intended by that word the station of his awe over all things in his rank from his deed among what God hath created beneath his rank, after reference to the prevention from his true ranks—twelve ranks of the invisible and the visible which God hath created and placed beneath his most great station, which hath no limitation in any place. And that is eleven of them referring to the mystery of the Essence that is beyond the comprehension of the human rank in the actual rank of his station, and one of them referring to his station, and one of them referring to the station of the All-Merciful that is connected to the things which God hath created beneath his rank, so that the people of the heart might know from that word their portion—that nothing from him, may my soul be his sacrifice, reacheth them except from the station of his mercy that is connected with what is encompassed in the rank of his deed, that they might sanctify him above the ranks of deed in the best of forms according to that division from this decisive Command.
And verily He—may my spirit be a sacrifice unto Him—did intend by that Word the stations of creation according to their order. From the first letter [alif] have the Tablets of Creation been filled with the Alif of Divine Unity, that there is no God but God.
And from the second [qaf] is reference to the manifestation of this Alif in the temples of the hundred which indicate naught but the first Alif.
And from the third [waw] is reference to the limitations in the six days wherein judgment was ordained for all, and it hath no station.
And from the fourth [lam] to the letter of Trinity from My Name which hath related all in its mystery and completed the days in its station, and it is that which God promised Moses on the Mount for its perfection in the stations of manifestation. And for this Name let the strivers strive.
And verily hath the All-Wise One established in this Word the ordinances of all worlds. And I, by His Most Great Right, have beheld in that Word His station—may my spirit be a sacrifice unto Him—in Divine Unity, and His proof in Uniqueness, and His sanctification in the Point of Abstraction. And verily hath He made subtle reference to the people of the depths of Oneness that I have been of those who have answered the Most Great Remembrance, and to the people of the depths of glorification through the Word of sanctification, and to the people of the depths of praise through the Word of glorification, and to the people of the surging ocean through the Word of Divine Unity. Glorified be God! And praise be to God! And there is no God but God! None knoweth His subtle handiwork in that Glorious Word save Him.
And whatsoever I have indicated regarding that station hath been intended as the shell for those who perceive only the shell. But as for the reference to the kernel, hearken unto My call, O peoples of possibility and existence! When God, glorified be He, desired to create the Gates for the completion of the Message from the Most Great Word unto all, He revealed unto Me concerning a handful of this red earth:
“O Word of God! Arise upon the Mount and manifest from the light of manifestation less than a needle’s eye of the All-Forgiving upon these temples standing at the gate of the Frequented House, that the people of witnessing may bear witness to the Promised Word of God, the Worshipped One, even as God hath testified of Himself that there is no God but He.”
I obeyed my Lord and stood upon the Mount, and looked toward them with their own gaze regarding their words, and there I heard from their realities according to their capacity, as they were worthy of the Most Great Word, beyond what the people of Moses asked of him when they said “O Lord, show Thyself to us that we may look upon Thee.” I observed them regarding their words when they acted unrighteously toward me, and therefore God promised them thirty days. When those days had passed, I turned toward them and found their realities had crystallized in acceptance, so I completed for them ten nights, each hour of which was like a thousand ages.
When the Book had fulfilled its term, I observed them in detail with my gaze, and found their realities like leaves of the myrtle tree. I called them to God’s true Call, and all responded according to their stations of nearness to the Mount. There I heard from all the judgments of their souls, and I heard from the Speaker of these words—may my spirit be a sacrifice for Him—these very words, and He spoke truly, relating the Command from the Beginning.
And when the forty was repeated three cycles, the letters Qaf and Kaf appeared, and the remaining ten indicate its elements from the nine spheres of heaven and one from the red earth. And the Alif and Vav indicate the seven stages of action from the manifestation of God’s Name to him in his station. Whosoever claims one of these is lacking has disbelieved in his Lord.
These seven are the seven letters of the name of that Shi’ih—he who knows Him has known Him and shall soon witness for himself the Most Great Truth, and he who is ignorant of Him has been ignorant and shall soon witness for himself the most great shortcoming. That leaf is an explanation of the Word from the Most Exalted Word—may my spirit be His sacrifice. The people of the Gate know through that Exposition all its expressions—may my spirit be a sacrifice for the mystery of the Exposition in their realities. Whoso desires explanation of their words has taken but a drop from that Most Great Water and has colored all with the color of that leaf.
Here it behooves us to say regarding a person from the people around the Gate: “Thus do We reward the doers of good.” Glory be to God, the Lord of the Throne, above what they attribute to Him. Peace be upon the Messengers. All praise be to God, the Lord of the worlds.
